BSL Level 1
This qualification is designed to teach learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. They will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL.
BSL Level 2
This qualification is to enable learners to develop their skills to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a range of everyday situations and to participate in more varied conversations than at Level 1. The course will also enable learners to have an understanding of grammar to cope with non-routine communication.
BSL Level 3
This qualification is for those interested in further developing their skills and knowledge in BSL. The learner will develop an advanced awareness of the structure and function of BSL and an understanding of the Deaf Community/Culture. The natural context of using BSL is done via discussions, conversations, debates as well as monologues and presentations.
BSL Level 4
The Level 4 Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL) meets the learning needs of those who already have competence in British Sign Language at Level 3 and are interested in developing their skills and knowledge. It is designed for those who work with, or want to work with, Deaf people (e.g. social workers, teachers of the Deaf, voluntary workers, workers within Deaf organisations, schools, etc.), and those who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in British Sign Language.
BSL Level 6
This qualification will develop the learner’s language skills towards Level 6 of the National Occupational Standards for Languages. Upon successful completion of this qualification, the learner will be able to use and understand complex BSL in all types of social and professional interaction. The learner will also be able to demonstrate language skills equivalent to an undergraduate degree in Modern Languages.
